Antarctica for Solo Organ, performed on May 21, 2014 at Prospect Presbyterian Church in Maplewood, NJ
Written for and premiered by Peter Ngqibs Ncanywa.
When Peter Ngqibs Ncanywa asked me to write a solo organ piece inspired by Antarctica, I thought of the desolate, perpetual, and mysterious qualities of the continent. Weights sustaining a C sound throughout, representing the endlessness of the landmass. A simple chord progression is introduced and gradually developed and thickened, adding dissonances as if ice is cracking and crashing into itself. Morsecode and deep, booming horns from unseen ships are heard before the piece dissolves into the original sustained C.
